Olympic Sprint Canoe and Kayak Half Day Camp

Available Weeks:

  • July Camp Dates: Week of July 6, 13, 20, 27
  • August Camp Dates: Week of August 3, 10, 17

Times:

  • 8:30am - 12pm each day

Cost:

  • $300 + HST per week

Description: Mississauga Canoe Club’s Summer Camp is a skill development program designed to introduce the community’s youth aged 9 – 12 years old to the sport of Olympic sprint canoe and kayak.  Delivered by qualified instructors, we maintain an instructor participant ratio of 1:5 with the emphasis placed on learning the paddling fundamentals and skills in a fun-filled environment.

  • No prior canoeing or kayaking experience required. Participants should be confident swimmers.
  • The Mississauga Canoe Club will provide paddle equipment and boats
  • Campers must arrive with their own appropriately sized personal floatation device (PFD)
  • dry-land co-operative games, arts & crafts and other fun and camp-oriented activities will not be a part of the camp itinerary.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Mississauga Canoe Club’s Kids Canoe/Kayak Summer Camp will be restricted to no more than 20 participants per day. In an effort to minimize interactions and reduce health risks, campers will be grouped in pods of no more than 6 and will have a designated Camp Counsellor assigned to that pod who will stay with that pod throughout the week. The camp day will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Campers are to check in no earlier than 10 minutes prior to the start of the camp and are required to be picked up from the canoe club promptly by 12 p.m.  Any equipment used will be sanitized several times per day by MCC staff.  MCC will work towards not having any equipment or boat sharing throughout all of our summer program and will look to assigning each camper their own piece(s) of equipment when and where possible

Our facilities will be largely restricted to staff and administrative access only therefore campers should be prepared to spend their entire camp day outside. The facility and bathrooms are off-limits and are only available for emergency use only.

Campers and camp staff will have a designated outside tented area to use as a hub for camp activities and to seek sun or rain shelter that will be off limits to all other club members and programs.

Participants are required to bring their own PFD, refillable water bottle, towel and sunscreen. No food/snacks are permitted this season. All campers are required to complete an at home, COVID-19 Screening and parents/guardians will need to sign and submit a waiver each day confirming that the screening has been completed.

Please contact MCC Camp Coordinator if you have any questions about the program.

Register

WO/ORR Slalom Development Program July 6 - August 30, 2020

Whitewater Ontario is pleased to announce that with the “Return to Sport” being implemented we are resuming our Slalom Development Program at the ORR Pumphouse Facility. This program, with coaches Lois Betteridge and James Risk, is designed to introduce and develop slalom specific skills and training to young paddlers that will allow them to proceed to the Whitewater Ontario Competitive Slalom Program if they wish.

Introduction to Slalom (Development A):

Aimed mainly at paddlers 8-12. For this program it is not necessary to know how to roll a kayak. Strong swimming abilities, and comfort around water is mandatory. No previous kayak experience required. Limited to 6 spots. If the program is full, please email James or Lois stating the participant’s name and the program desired; a waitlist will be created.

Beginner/Intermediate Slalom (Development B):

Aimed mainly at paddlers 12-16 who have participated in ORR  summer camps or/and WO/ORR Winter Pool Sessions. Paddlers should know how to roll a kayak, and should be comfortable doing basic white water maneuvers around the pumphouse.

Limited to 6 spots. If the program is full please email James and Lois stating the participant’s name and the program desired a waitlist will be created.

As a division of the B development group, we are hoping to be able to offer the option of an all girls group. This group would work individually with Lois for one session a week, and be combined with the rest of the Dev B group for the other two sessions. Please specify in registration if you would prefer this option.

We will only be able to offer this if there is sufficient interest and balanced enough signup between both sections of Dev B. If we are unable to offer it after signup, then the Dev B group will remain a single group for all sessions and alternative girls only sessions will be arranged.

Dates and Times:

Development A sessions will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from July 6 until August 30 in the 5:30 to 7:30 PM timeslot.

Development B sessions will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from July 6 until August 30 in the 5:30 to 7:30 PM timeslot.

Equipment:

  • Boats and paddles and spray decks will be provided
  • Helmets and PFDs: Due to Covid-19 we are asking that participants obtain their own whitewater helmet and PFD. Please contact the coaches if you are having trouble acquiring a helmet or pfd and we can help you out.

Registration:
